DIE VIER EDLEN WAHRHEITEN BUDDHAS UND DIE VIER GROSSEN IRRTU¡§MER FU¡§R NIETZSCHE
SKOWRON, MICHAEL
Abstract
In this paper Buddha¢¥s four Noble Truth and the four Great Errors according to Nietzsche are related to each other. It is shown that and why 1. the four Great Errors have a similar central role in Nietzsche¢¥s philosophy as the four Noble Truth have in Buddha¢¥s philosophy, 2. the avoidance of the four Great Errors can give us a better understanding of Buddha¢¥s four Noble Truth, 3. by avoiding the Error of Free Will we can understand the necessary-accidental and therefore innocent Buddha-Nature of all things, 4. by referring to physiological conditions false and imaginary causes are avoided, 5. by avoiding the error of confusing causes and consequences the relative and noble character of the four Noble Truth can be explained, 6. the understanding of contradiction and "Not-two" is for Nietzsche as well as for Buddha fundamental, 7. the four Great Errors are not in the same sense Nietzsche¢¥s errors as the four Noble Thruth are Buddha¢¥s truths. While thruths imply and suppose a belief in truth, this belief is not necessary for the avoidance of errors. Avoidance of an error doesn¢¥t guarantee that we have already truth. It could also only indicate the sublimation or transformation of an error. As Nietzsche says, what is new in his attitude towards philosophy is "a conviction, that so far no one and no time has ever had: that we do not have the truth All humans so far ¢¥had the truth¢¥: even the sceptics." (Nachlass 1880, KSA 9, 3 [19]). Neither that attitude nor this sentence are simple truths, but selfknowingly contradictive in themselves, because even avoiding errors seems not possible without at least an understanding of truth, and the statement that we do not have the truth seems to claim truth for itself. But the priority in the relation between truth and error has changed.
